Mix Tape Shuffle: Go home, playlist! You're drunk!

It's mix tape time! And in honor of the drinkingest holiday we know of, we bring you the Drinking Songs edition of the MixTape shuffle.

There are songs I love that are all about drinking. I credit this to my dad, whose love of country music during the heyday of the drinking song cultivated this love. The bottle didn't let me down on this one, and I came up with a long list of drink-related tunes... but then I thought about it a little more.
When I'm imbibing in adult beverages, I require music. It's a visceral need. But when I thought more about it, I realized that my tastes vary, based on my drink of choice.

For instance, if I'm swilling beers (keg optional), it's primarily the adrenaline-drenched music of my late teens. Give me Guns & Roses, Metallica, Rancid, Sleigh Bells, Rage Against the Machine and the Ramones. I want it loud, guitar-heavy and aggressive or I want country drinking songs.

For those whiskey soaked nights, it's more introspective. A little more introspective, a little more substance over style, I crave the blues. This is when I want the Rolling Stones, the Clash, the Graveltones, Pink Floyd and Merle Haggard. Music that makes me want to sit back and savor.

Mixed drinks on the menu? That's usually a dance night, and that's when we kick it old school. I want the one-hit wonders of the 80s, sprinkled with some Disco and maybe even upbeat country. It's the songs with the beat and the memories of crashing weddings when I was underage. Give me Salt & Pepa, Tone Loc, Vanilla Ice, really ALL. THE. DANCING. SONGS.

Of course, some artists defy category and will fit all of them. Amy Winehouse? Easy. "I'm No Good" is the beer song, "Back to Black" is the whiskey song, "Rehab" is the mixed drink song. AC/DC ("You Shook Me All Night Long," "She's Got the Jack" & "Who Made Who," respectively) and Led Zepplein ("Black Dog," "The Ocean," "All of My Love" for the slow jam) also transcend categorizing for me.

And what about wine? Well, wine goes with everything.

So here is my playlist, featuring five from each category: beer, bourbon & cocktails.

And since this is the MixTape Shuffle, we'd love for you to play along. Join the link up below and be sure to visit the other blogs on the list for a completely different take on the theme.

  1. I knew at least one person was going to post a Flogging Molly tune!

I see what you mean by our overlap. I actually culled RatM, Ramones, REAL Van Halen, Jane's Addiction, and I somehow bumped off my Rolling Stones selection, which wasn't supposed to happen. Going to fix that now.

Great selections, Mari! I find my playlists propelled by mood rather than what I'm drinking. It's always interesting to see how other people "drink."
